Thank you Sami

Sami Hyypiä is now leaving Liverpool to play for German side Bayer Levekusen. The great Finn has been a center back at Anfield for the last decade, and will be remembered by the fans for his loyalty.

Hyypiä is from the small town Porvoo in Finland. Starting his professional career in the local side MyPa he went on the the dutch side Willem II in 1995 before Houllier signed him to Liverpool in 1999. Despite a lot of criticism, the signing proved to be very good. Hyypiä played more than 300 games for Liverpool, many of them wearing the captains armband. He helped Liverpool to win the treble (The league cup, FA cup and UEFA cup) in 2001 as well as the Champions League in 2005. He has also been named player of the year in Finland an outstanding seven times!

As Hyypiä now leaves for Germany, we thank him and wish him all the best. The Finn got his last minutes for Liverpool at Anfield in the season’s last game against Tottenham, almost scoring. Watch Sami’s teary goodbye with the Kop in the video. There is no doubt he was a highly appreciated player both to the fans and his team mates.

Rafa Benitez has announced he welcomes when he decides to end his career as a player. He could possibly be joining the coaching staff at Anfield. Sami is more than welcome, and we wish him all the best.
