Showing great form early on, many of us were convinced this was the year the 19 year long wait for the Premiership would come to an end. As the season progressed The Reds kept grabbing impressive wins, and with Manchester United dropping important points, Liverpool seemed like a real favourite.
However, Liverpool were to hit a few disappointing results against the presumably weaker opponents dropping points to Stoke, Wigan and twice to Hull. At this time, United and Chelsea were breathing down our necks, with Arsenal lagging further behind.
Manchester United steadily picked up form, and along with that also their luck. Scoring late winning goals in several matches, they soon found themselves on top of the league table. Not even our tremendous 4-1 hammering at Old Trafford could prevent them from winning.
Despite not being able to bring the trophy back to Anfield this year, we have never been this close in the history of the modern Premier League. Liverpool supporters are known to be confident of their team a head of each season, claiming this will be “it”. There are, however, reasons why our wait will stop at 20 years.
1. Quality Players
There is no doubt Liverpool has one of the most talented sides in the Premiership. With world class quality at all positions, the team is as good as any. If anything, we might be lacking back up quality. Although the squad stepped up and showed a huge potential and ability during the injuries of Gerrard and Torres, we do need a couple of more world class players.
Following manager Benitez’ moves early on in the “silly season”, he does seem to realise the need to strengthen the squad. Hence I am certain he will be able to bring in a few fresh top notched players.
2. Consistency
Liverpool have the talent to beat any opposing side. Liverpool have over the latest seasons shown brilliance from time to time, but have been far from consistent. Consistency is essential in a long season, and last season was a huge step towards becoming that consistent team. Only losing two(!) games in 38, it is hard to believe we were not able to win.
Looking at the the facts though, Liverpool drew 11 games. This is far too many, Manchester United only drawing 6. That is 10 points dropped to United. Having the games in mind, Liverpool were far superior the opposition in most of these games. Being able to win these games could be essential, and following up last year’s progress should bring even more points to Liverpool.
3. A secure and balanced squad
Rafael Benitez, Daniel Agger, Dirk Kuyt, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard have all recently shown their dedication to the club signing new contracts. The manager is, in my mind, a tactical magician, and it is utterly important that he stays with the club. The mentioned players all play tremendous roles in the team. With a good mix of young, talented, and experienced players, Liverpool should be frightening to any side.
Now, keep Xabi Alonso!
Watching the players and fans coming together saluting Hyypiä in the last game of the season, showed a real team spirit which also could prove to be a decisive factor.
3.1 Benitez, Reina, Gerrard and Torres.
Possibly the most talented manager, goalkeeper, midfielder and striker in the world.
4. Determination and dedication
The fans, players and city have waited long enough. We may not have United or Chelsea’s money, but seeing the light in Carragher’s eyes when he speaks of bringing the Premiership to Anfield, seeing how Kuyt never ever stops running, knowing Steven Gerrard can pop up with anything at any time and knowing The Kop will never stop singing, makes me certain no other team comes close to the dedication and eagerness to win.
What do you think? Will Liverpool be able to throw United of it’s throne? What needs to be done a head of next season?
