According to BBC, Glen Johnson is just steps away from signing a contract with Liverpool. The defender proved his ability last season, and has also attracted the interest of Chelsea and Manchester City. However, Benitez has claimed his confidence in making Johnson his first summer signing.
Earlier today, the official Liverpool website also announced Johnson’s name was available for print on Liverpool shirts. This has now been removed, but several other sources already consider him a Liverpool player.
The transfer fee is believed to be £ 17 million, and will probably be paid down over a two year period. Pompey still owe Liverpool a down payment for last year’s transfer of Peter Crouch, which most likely will be subtracted from the deal.
Benitez has been given restricted funds for player signings this summer, and he is believed to be willing to let some players go. Ryan Babel has been suggested to join his fellow countryman Frank Rijkaard, head coach at Galatasaray. Andrea Dossena has been linked to a return to Italy and Juventus, whereas Real Madrid seem to have given up on Xabi Alonso. The Madrid side has been very active, spending unbelieveable amounts this summer. Being refused a deal with Liverpool for Alonso, they are now targeting Alvaro Arbeloa for an estimated £ 8 million. They have also shown strong interest in goalkeeper Pepe Reina, as they fail to agree a new contract with Victor Valdes.
Latest rumors claim Mascherano might be moving to Nou Camp and Barcelona, despite Benitez’ clear refusal on their approach on the player. Mascherano’s wife, still in Argentina, is said to be unwilling to join him in Liverpool and would rather see him at Barcelona next season. Barca are supposedly willing to offer an astonishing £ 45 million for the Argentinian, as well as the inclusion of a smiliar player such as Yaya Touré.
That might be an offer hard to refuse for Rafa…
